Milliner's Shop, Michigan City

Mrs. William H. Schoenemann owned this hat shop in Michigan City, pictured around 1883. She is seen standing to the right of the door. The shop featured "Fashion, Millinery & Fancy Goods." The relatively simple building displays the arched window and door openings and ornamental brackets under the eaves that are hallmarks of the Italianate style, popular in the 1860's and 1870's.  Note also the wood plank sidewalk. The only other identified person in the photo is Mrs. Henry Hartke, the former Emma Caroline Schoenemann, wearing a black dress and standing in the doorway.
