Verification of Camp Jackson at La Porte
29th Indiana Regimant
La Porte Herald, August 17, 1861
Military in La Porte

Last Wednesdaay, the 14th inst. was the first time it was settled that Col. Miller’s Regiment would rendezvous near this place. The citizens here were required to furnish barracks for the camp, which cost about $600.00.  This was agreed to at once and subscriptions to that amount were soon taken. Thursday, money was advanced by Dr. Teegarden to purchase the lumber for the barracks and these matters are going on as fast as possible to get the ground ready to be occupied which is located at Stanton's Grove one mile east of La Porte and will be ready for occupancy by next Monday.  In the meantime one company of Col. Miller's Regiment is encamped at the County Fair Grounds.

Aside from the present company here from Goshen, Col. Miller expects two from La Porte, Capt. J. S. Fosdick's and Capt. S. L. Allen, the former nearly full and the latter filling up; one company from South Bend nearly full; one from Steuben full now; one from Plymouth; one from White Co.; one from Fulton and one from Miami, during the coming week.

Several other companies have been offered but the Colonel very wisely will not accept a company for certain until it is ready to "come on".  He is desirous of having the regiment filled at the earliest moment.

A Regimental Band under the lead of Henry Lathrop of Goshen is accepted, composed of members from Goshen and Middlebury.  The company from Goshen now occupying the Fairgrounds have elected their officers as follows: Capt.             Oblinger, 1st Lieut., H. G. Davis, 2nd Lieut., Jasper Barnes.
