This is a very interesting website for me as my father, Reginald R. (Rex) Rambo, graduated from La Porte HS in 1927. I have a picture of the cast of the Junior class play, and also a copy of the program of that play, that was presented in 1926. My father is among those pictured. Thank you much for this website!

Was hoping someone here could help us find or direct us to information on an old, possibly antique, piano and dinette set (table and chairs). We do not know the year of either but the piano is old, upright Webster, New York. A number is on the inside not sure if this is the serial or not but it is 28225. The table is again old, dark cherry colored and 6 legged table with glass hoofs. Very detailed design on legs and chairs. My father Clarence A. Bennitt, was born in Rolling Prairie in 1887 and grew up in La Porte. I think he still has relatives there. They were the Moyers from Fish Lake.

Hi.. born In La Porte, moved out when I was 2 but back when I was about 20... Loved the town but finally had to move out of the snow. I am searching for anyone who remembers a tragic murder that happened when I was just a child, The ladies name was Fannie Summerfield and my grandmother used to be her housekeeper... she was killed by a couple of her yard men or someone that worked for her... just interested... Also My maiden name is Bernth and my dad used to own a gas station and I have two brothers who still live in La Porte county... The museum has many pictures of La Porte in the early 1900's. I found several interesting pictures relating to Sage's Ice Cream during this period of time. It is interesting to note that in addition to Ice Cream, my great grandfather Louis C. Sage had a bottling company and evidently made chocolate candy. I know this is a very "Odd" request...Please do NOT think I am "Insane" or mentally challenged, I have been a Police Officer for years in Florida. I lived in La Porte in 1959-1963...And am Haunted by an then Ex School mate Identified as Laura Diezlen (Not sure of last name spelling). She would have been about 7-8 years old, she was my neighbor on Severs Road, just north of 100 West...She ran out into traffic one night and was struck and killed by a car. I would like a picture of her. I have searched every where, I remember her mother sold Eggs to my mother, and that she was a school mate of mine. I am haunted by her spirit constantly. I enjoyed reading about the Brown-Augustine home. I have many pictures myself of this home. My great uncle, Edwin Wesley Dunlavy was the unfortunate owner when it burned to the ground. He died three years later. I think the loss of this home contributed to the depression that he suffered prior to his death. Edwin had married Edna Augustine, daughter of Jacob Augustine. Edna had died in 1942.

I lived in La Porte for about 40 years. In all that time I never could stop a vehicle and read the historical markers. I had to move away from La Porte and read them on your web site. As a child I rode my bike to the museum when it was in the basement of the Court House. The museum has always fascinated me from the crazy quilt on the antique bed to the left of the front door to the gun collection. I have been back to visit the museum and it continues to fascinate me. Just found the web site for my home town. I've been gone for many years but will never forget 4th of July parades and Slicer football games at Kiwanis field. I attended 10th Street elementary school and left La Porte in 1968 (ninth grade). Would love to hear of any information regarding Sage's Ice Cream and Confectionery. I understand it is gone now but I was fortunate enough to have enjoyed it before it went out of business. I can still taste those chocolate malts. Would love to hear from anyone who can relay any information about the history of Sage's? I am an avid collector of Ice Cream and Soda Fountain memorabilia and Sage's was my inspiration. I can't begin to tell you how great your site is for a former resident of LaPorte. I too, like so many of the visitors, am from La Porte and enjoyed visiting the actual museum in the basement of the Old Court House. It was always "so much to see and so little time to see it". I joined the Marine Corps in 1966 and rarely got back to La Porte, so this site means a lot to me. So many people are asking about Bell Gunness books. Sylvia Elizabeth Shepherd, living in La Porte, authored "The Mistress of Murder Hill" in 2001. The County Historical Society provided the photos. Thank you for allowing me to visit once again.

I would like to take the time to personally thank Ms. Fern Eddy Schultz for her time and assistance with a search about a year ago for my gg Grandfather, Horace CRAM. My quest fell off for a bit and have just again been able to restart the process and because of the information she provided me, I have been able to piece together a trail...and went from not even knowing my gg Grandfather's name to now having the location of where he was laid to rest in the year 1900. I still have a lot of leads to follow and info to gather in order to establish his birthdate and deathdate....but wanted to be sure that I somehow let you know again, Ms. Schultz how thankful I am to have this link with my past. There was a notation that came up that there may be a possibility to trace the CRAM lineage by reading your book 'LaPorte, Indiana and its Environs?' Is this possible? Please respond. Thanks.

I used to live in LaPorte back in the 80s and was fascinated with the story of Belle Gunness. It's a shame that there was no DNA testing back then, they could have tested Phillip's DNA with that of the behead women found in the fire. Too bad that the organs that were tested back then weren't kept, they could do the DNA testing today and finally put to rest whether she lived or died in that fire.

I am inquiring about any information on Reid, Murdock & Co. This company commission Pioneer Cooperage to build a large barrel for Wm. Donahey, author of the Teenie Weenies in 1926. It was used as a summer cabin where he did much of his writing, for Donahey and his wife here in Grand Marais, MI. It is still standing today but in much need of restoration. I am trying to find out some information about someone who is probably one of my relatives, a John Staves; an American Indian, from the Pottawattomie tribe, who was hanged for murder in the spring of 1838. The story goes that John had killed someone for some money and a horse and saddle. He was apparently convicted because there were nick marks on a whittled club handle that coincided with the "criminal's" pocked knife and because John Staves had been found to be in possession of the saddle and considerable money. It is not a great thing to discover that you have may have someone in your family who was hung for murder, however, I'd like to know more about his trial and the history of the Indian People in the area. We had been told that our american Indian "Staves" relatives had gone from what is now called Quebec to the USA. I am told that the last Indian people left the "Reserve land" of Porter around 1845. I'd appreciate any information or suggestions on where to look for more info. tks

Hello, I happened on your web site while looking up old murders in Indiana. My Grandmother used to point out the murder house on the way to her house in Michigan City. We used to live in La Porte from 1952-1960 at 102 Gove Steet. It was a old 4 plex apartment building. My dad helped to replace a carpet runner in the hallway there and found old newspapers with articles about the Lincoln Assassination. I went to Maple School from 1957 till 1960 then moved when I was 8 to Ca. I have been back once and stopped at the Museum. It still had most of the stuff I remember from my childhood days. Having lived with the Hazzard family in your city more than 50 years ago as an exchange student and attended LPHS for one school year I intensely enjoy your Historical Photography department and rarely fail to download a new picture. The one thing which I deplore is that there are no webcams showing what goes on in your city. Wouldn't it be great to be able to look down from the court house clock tower at any time of the day or night, or to look out over the city golf course from Beechwood Drive (where the Hazzards then lived)? I love your site & miss the great memories of LaPorte. Maple school, Sage's Ice Cream, the LP fair , 4th of July parades,the old LP Museum, Tastee Freeze, "Hook-man road", cruisin' the drag, T-Bird bowling alley, & sledding at the Elk's Club. Ahhhh. What more could a kid growing up ask for? Some things may be gone, but their memory lives on. ***I have an original set of photos taken at the Gunness site, just like the ones you have at the museum. Also, an original Belle Gunness signature, plus other pieces. They were handed down to me from my great-grandfather, Charles F. Pahrman. He helped with, and is mentioned in, Lillian de la Torre's book "The Truth About Belle Gunness". He was a very interesting guy, and had many collections. There are some of his donated items in your museum. Keep up the good work.

I was born in LaPorte in 1981, and moved to Hazard, KY when I was 5 yrs. old. I haven't been back in 17 years. I've lost most contact with my family, and haven't met a half brother who still lives their (I think). My family's name is Clark, and I think my grandmother's name is Sue Clark. I am researching my GG Grandparents, John Rensselaer Reynolds and Keturah (Vincent) Reynolds who moved to La Porte in 1838. They had five children: Mary Elizabeth, Joshua, James M. and George R. Reynolds, who was my maternal, G Grandfather. Keturah died in la Porte in 1857 and I can find no record of her buriel, or of the family's existence in La Porte. We know that they lived on a farm just outside of La Porte (city) and that John moved with his son George to marshall Co., IN, when Keturah died in 1857.

Hello! My maiden name is CRAM and I am desperately searching for information relating to my great grandparents....David Cram b.12-1859 and his wife of abt. the year 1879, Josie Peterson b. 11-1858 according to a 1900 MI census, but that is probably misleading as she was most likely already born before she and her family immigrated to the USA from Sweden in 1850 or 1851. They were said to be of the LaPorte, IN area as were supposedly David's parents as well as Samuel and Emely Peterson (Josie's parents). I do have other information that is verified and some that is not......I'd really just appreciate finding out more about David's parents (his mother is possibly Phebe?)and apparently he may be an only child...........to be able to continue tracing back the Cram lineage. I recently took time to visit the museum and purchase several of the new books. I found it so very interesting. The new LP County books are great. I gave one to my brother-in-law living in Connecticut. He really enjoyed it. My brother in San Diego wants one also. It makes a great coffeetable book. I work at General Insurance, formerly Hargrave Boston & Taylor @1200 Michigan Ave., LP. Our building was built by Pulaski King. Many inside changes have been made of course to accomodate offices. However, fireplaces, tall ceilings, & large wood trim and such still exist. Customers have commented that they had been to parties for Christmas & such when it was still a home. I wonder if anyone has any photos that were taken inside the home when it was a home. Let me know if anyone has anything of interest. Thanks!

Family roots are in Michigan City, Chesterton, Valparaiso. Marquardt Family of these cities are my relatives (maternal). Julius Marquardt, Father of Gustave Adolph of Valpo, emigrated to USA in 1854 and settled in Michigan City. A fire destroyed all family documents in 1856,I understand, from a letter by Agnes Marquardt Burgwedel of Chicago,1908. (She was 65 y/o at that time.) There were at least three girls and Gustave that came as children with Marquardts, Julius and Ernestine. I have not been able to find them in Michigan City but will persistently pursue the third week of August when I return for another vacation there! Any info or leads would be appreciated. Maq

Very nice site. My great uncle was W.A. Jones who left the wonderful gun collection to the La Porte museum. My mother Hazel as a small child met Uncle Ad when he lived in the mansion on the lake. I especially enjoyed the wonderful gun collection and photos of Uncle Ad with Teddy Roosevelt during African safaris. Its also interesting to note that Uncle Ad was a 33rd degree Mason. Nimrod and Margaret Phillips left La Porte Co. IN late 1849 for Texas. They were my ggg-grandparents. Their daughter, Jane (b. 1830, was my gg-grandmother and was married in Dallas, TX in 1851. We are not able to confirm the lineage beyond Nimrod and Margaret Phillips. Any suggestions will be welcomed!

Just came across your website. I have researched my family name and found two LaPorte brothers came over with the French to help in the Revelutionary War and never went back to France They settled in Virginia.

I read an article in NUVO magazine about Indiana's biggest crimes. Belle Gunness was listed and I decided to do some research about her. I think you have a wonderfully done and easy to use website and I plan on visiting the museum soon to learn more about Belle & La Porte.

I am researching the Hoosline (or Hooseline) family. Michael was to have come from Germany in 1840's with 2 children being born in New York, 3rd John Hoosline born in 1845 in LaPorte, Indiana, he joined the 128 Infantry Regiment in Indiana on March 7, 1864. Is there any of this family remaining in the area?

Originally from LaPorte I moved to the San Diego, California area 17yrs ago. I was just talking with friends about my hometown and Belle Gunness. Last night HBO aired a program about forensics and had a segment on Belle. I taped it and showed to my coworkers. I grew up in LaPorte and remember visiting the Belle Gunness exhibit. I saw an shocking program on HBO this evening regarding information that I never knew about. According to the HBO program "Autopsy 8:Dead Giveaway" Belle Gunness was arrested for murder in 1931. She was 72 years old and was living under the last name of Carlson. She died while awaiting trial and an old neighbor from LaPorte recognized the photo and reported that it was Gunness. Found in a steamer trunk in Carlsons hotel room were photos of Gunness' young daughters and the coroner was able to verify that Carlson was in fact Gunness. The program will air again on Saturday, 04/13/02 at 9pm on HBO 2.

This is not a posting, but a lead as to what became of Bluebeard Belle. HBO has a forensic show this month (April 2002) which discusses Belle Gunness. They claim she ended up dying in jail in California awaiting trial for another lonely hearts murder. This was MANY years after the fire in La Porte. The show claims someone in Indiana recognized pictures of her in the newspaper. Hope this infomation helps someone. Laura Payne

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy the museum. When I was younger, my sister and I would go there almost every week. My favorite exhibit was all the old dolls and (of course) the Belle Gunness exhibit. I now have a four year old girl who I am taking to there today. I'm very excited to share the experience with her. I have not been to the museum in about 7 years. I moved to Michigan but I was born and raised in LaPorte. I'm very proud to say I'm from here.
