In 1864 the first LaPorte High School building was erected on Harrison Street, between Clay and Jackson. The present Lincoln Elementary School is on the same spot. The brick building was 81 x 90 feet and the belfry was 25 feet square at the base, rising 62 feet above the roof. Stairs inside the tower led to the iron- fenced top, where the students were permited to view the town, lakes and surrounding scenery on Friday afternoons.
The building was altered and added to, becoming Central Junior High School after a new High School building was constructed in 1894, just south of the building pictured. Both buildings are gone, with only a gymnasium remaining as part of the present Lincoln Elementary School.
