La Porte County Historical Society Museum

The past endeavors of LaPorte County residents m making useful objects are documented in this display. One of La Porte's main industries was the Rumely Company which manufactured steam traction engines, harvesting equipment, and the famous Oil Pull kerosene-filled tractor until the 1930's when Allis-Chalmers bought them out. Allis-Chalmers was La Porte's biggest employer until the 1980's when it closed.
Another major county industry was the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant, which was constructed to manufacture explosives during World War II. Objects from the plant, including the obviously important “No Smoking” signs, are in the display. Other local industries included are Joy Manufacturing, Pullman-Standard, and Dunham Co. of Michigan City.
