This excellent example of the Greek Revival style of architecture no longer exists. It burned in 1950, from a fire due to faulty wiring. The house was built in 1834 by Henry Brown, and was later owned by Jacob Augustine, a Civil War Captain. It was located on U.S. 20, 3 miles west of New Carlisle, in LaPorte County. A formal temple-with-wings plan, with a central two-story block, the symmetry of the Greek Revival style was maintained by a false chimney on the west wing. This balanced the operational chimney on the east wing.
The interior was reportedly decorated with walnut trim, from trees cut on the site. This important house was included in a Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) with complete measured drawings, elevations, sections, and interior details.
