La Porte County Historical Society Museum

Antique Toy Collection

One of the strengths of the La Porte County Historical Society's museum collection is its large representation of children's toys from the late 1800's.

Dolls
An entire display case is devoted to a grouping of dolls,
several of them made in France by Armand Marseilles.

Doll Houses
Girls were in early training for keeping house by playing with miniature examples of the stoves, utensils, irons, and other items that their mothers were using in the household. Two dollhouses are also on display at the museum.

Toys
On Sundays children were allowed to play only with Biblical theme toys,
and a wooden Noah's Ark complete with animals was one of the most popular.
