Most of the museum contains manmade objects dating from the early 19th century to the present day. This, however, shows only the history of LaPorte County since settlement by pioneers of mostly European descent. That, of course, leaves out thousands of years of history of the area.

The prehistoric era of the Native American tribes that lived in Northern Indiana is represented in our extensive displays of arrowheads, spear points, axe heads, and other tools.

Also of interest are exhibits of the natural history of the region, including rocks, fossils, preserved birds collected in the Grand Kankakee swamp, and mastodon and wooly mammoth bones. Two large jawbones are on view, as well as teeth, vertebrae, and a tusk excavated on local farms.
