Teegarden Hotel, LaPorte

This picture is of the Teegarden Hotel built for Dr. Abram Teegarden, M.D. in 1851-1852 when the Northern Indiana and South Michigan Railroad first reached LaPorte. A steady stream of customers was readily available, making a first class hotel a necessity for the town which was barely two decades old. This was possibly the largest building in town and displays elements of the Greek Revival style. The iron balcony over the main entrance was the scene of many a public address by such notables as Oliver P. Morton, Indiana's Civil War Governor, Vice President Colfax, and General Benjamin Harrison (later President.)

The Teegarden was later known as the Richter, the Stanley, and finally as the Hotel Annex when the Rumely Hotel took it over.  It was located at the southeast corner of Main Street (Lincolnway) and Monroe. Torn down in 1940, it was replaced by a one-story Woolworth's store.
